Chiropractic is a natural healthcare system that focuses on the relationship between the structure of the body, primarily the spine, and the function of the body. All functions of the body are controlled and coordinated by the nervous system. The nervous system communicates with the rest of the body through the spinal cord, which is encased within the spine or spinal column. A chiropractor’s goal is not to give patients drugs so they don’t feel pain, but to discover the source of the pain and correct the problem. The word chiropractic comes from the Greek “chiro” and “praktikos,” meaning “done by hand.” Chiropractors, therefore, examine and locate areas of the spine and other regions of the body for misalignments/joint fixations, also known as subluxations, which cause pain or dysfunction. Once these areas are found, an adjustment is used to correct the misalignments/subluxations thereby reducing or eliminating pain and restoring function.
A subluxation (joint fixation) is a condition in which one of the bones of the spine, or backbone, has lost its proper position to another. This can result in pressure being placed on the nerves which exit off of the spinal cord. Because of this, pain, numbness, tingling, loss of sensation, muscle spasms, decreased of range of motion, and dysfunction in many areas of the body can result. In addition to this, sometimes other bones in the body, especially those that form the extremity joints (shoulder, elbow, knee, etc.) can also become subluxated.
An adjustment is a specific force applied by your chiropractor’s hands or an instrument used by the chiropractor to your spine/extremities (shoulder, wrist, etc.) to restore normal alignment, motion and function.
